The First Mill circa 1644, powered with water became the source for the name: Water Mill. A subsequent 18th century Mill is now the Water Mill Museum. The area has a colorful history beyond the farming of Long Island Potatoes, Corn and seasonal crops which covered much of the land. Despite the development of many of these former pastures (as land values increased), fields of crops,  green foliage and farmhouses have remained  nestled around large shingle  “Hamptons” style traditional houses that have sprouted up  in the past 15+ years. The Halsey Farmstand on Deerfield road is open in-season.
